
Cranberries, blueberries, and raspberries are all good for urinary health because they contain nutrients that help prevent and manage urinary tract infections (UTIs). That's why this fruit crumble recipe for menopausal urinary health is great for middle aged women.
Cranberries
Contain anthocyanins, which protect against the E. coli bacteria that causes UTIs. One study found that women who ate cranberries were 26% less likely to get UTIs.
Blueberries
Contain anti-adhesives that prevent bacteria like E. coli from sticking to the bladder wall. Blueberries may also prevent bladder dysfunction.
Raspberries
Contain vitamin C, which helps the bladder fight off bad bacteria
Berry Crumble serves 4
Ingredients
400g of berries (choose from Raspberries/Cranberries/Blueberries or some of each)
Crumble topping, makes plenty so freeze what you don’t use.
200g plain flour
100g demererra sugar
80g butter
35g ground almonds
10g flaked almonds
Method
To make the crumble mix together all the ingredients except the flaked almonds and mix them until the look like bread crumbs.
Now stir in the flaked almonds
Place on a metal roasting tin and bake at 180C for about 20 min. Stir the mix every 5 min until the mix is golden brown. Leave to cool.
For a traditional hot crumble heat the berries until soft, put in an oven proof dish and sprinkle a little crumble over the top and pop in the oven until the filling bubbles.
I like crumble cold! And it’s easy to portion into little ramikins and freeze for another day.
If you want crumble for breakfast then have some of the whole, uncooked fruit and sprinkle a table spoon of crumble over the fruit with a dollop of yoghurt, it’s like granola…only better!
